Statistics Concerning Children Non-Occupants in Child Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention
, in 2015 one in every five children under the age of 15 who perished in traffic accidents and crashes were pedestrians. A 2015 study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
concluded that from a total of 1,132 child motor vehicle traffic fatalities, 21 percent were pedestrians.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched the Be Safe Be Seen program in 2017 in an effort to combat these high pedestrian fatality statistics. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association report , the program’s aim is to decrease the number of fatalities and injuries along and around I-35 in the Austin area. The campaign provided reflective bags that were given to the homeless population and school children, two of the most at-risk groups of people.
According to the same report, the Texas Children’s Hospital’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Education and Outreach project made their rounds in the Houston metropolitan area providing education about safe pedestrian and bicycling behaviors to help reduce these staggering children pedestrian fatality statistics.
