On the morning of Friday, June 5th, a horrendous car accident occurred in West Harris County, leaving a 16-year-old male dead and 2 other teenagers in critical condition.
According to local officials, the accident occurred at approximately 2:22 a.m. on Highway 6 near Loch Katrine Lane. A 16-year-old driver was operating a BMW and was speeding southbound on Highway 6.
As the driver was approaching the intersection between Highway 6 and Loch Katrine Lane, an intoxicated 47-year-old driver driving a Hummer struck the BMW and sent the vehicle spinning into a steel light pole, ultimately tearing the vehicle in half.
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The driver of the BMW and another 18-year-old passenger were left in critical condition and were rushed to the nearest hospital.
Police arrested the man driving the Hummer and charged him with driving-under-the-influence.
Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is extremely dangerous, not only for the driver but also for everyone else on the road. In fact, it is estimated that at least 30 people die across the United States every day as a result of drunk driving, which equals out to one death every 50 minutes. Additionally, in 2018 a total of 10,511 fatalities occurred as a direct result of a drunk-driving accident in the United States.
And in the state of Texas, drunk drivers were responsible for approximately 26% (940 individuals) of the entire state’s car accident fatalities that same year, where the majority of drunk driving incidents were reported between 2:00 a.m. and 2:59 a.m.
Throughout most of the data through several studies, car accidents involving younger, inexperienced drivers occur mostly due to the lack of knowledge about traffic laws and speed limits and driving experience.
In a report conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2017, approximately 2,364 teenagers aged 16 to 19 were killed as a result of a car accident, averaging 6 teenage deaths per day on U.S. roadways.
Around 40% of these teenage drivers and passenger (aged 13-19) accidents occurred between 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., and males (aged 16-19) had a much higher fatality rate that was twice as higher over female teenage drivers of the same age group.
